Ferran Adrià and elBulli Exhibition at the Palau Robert Barcelona

By Javier Castillo - July/18/2012

Never had a chance to eat at elBulli? The Palau Robert in Barcelona is currently exhibiting a retrospective which will bring you as close as possible to what that dining exprience was all about. In case you don’t know about elBulli and its celebrity chef, Ferran Adrià, it was a 3-Michelin restaurant in Cala Montjuic, a short car ride from the town of Roses on Catalonia´s Costa Brava. I say it "was" because, sadly, the restaurant closed in July of 2011. However, it will be re-opening in 2014 as a creativity center for the masses. As has been stated, the new center will serve as a think-tank to further develop the innovation and experimentation with gastronomy, more specifically molecular gastronomy – a subdiscipline of food science heavily practiced and perfected by Ferran Adrià.  The “Ferran Adrià and elBulli. Risk, Freedom and Creativity” exhibition unveils the creative universe and talent of Ferran Adrià, showcasing his unique talent and capacity as chef and gastronomical artist. The exhibit is a voyage through the various stages, eras of elBulli and highlights some of the cooking techniques and processes that made elBulli a world renown and avant-garde restaurant.

Everything you wanted to know about elBulli, Ferran Adrià and the staff can be found and learned through the various photos, experimental notes, videos, awards, menus, books, cooking apparatus and tools, and several other pieces on display to the public. As you go through the various rooms you will see and learn about elBullis creative process and what made this stellar restaurant one of a kind and well deserving of its 3-Michellin status. Not only a retrospective about its past, the exhibit also delves into the question we all have: What will become of this famous establishment? Checking out the elBulli website will answer that question. As such, we are given a glimpse into the future and the evolutionary transformation that will take place converting the restaurant into the creative center (i.e. elBullifoundation) that will replace it. Elbulli the restaurant might no longer be open, but the spirit, innovation and passion of Ferran Adria and his collaborators will evolve into something spectacular and new, we can be very sure of that.
